What the Royals did have was a belief that all things were possible instilled in them by their coach, Coach Gerald Caveness. On March 8, 1969, in Jackson, Mississippi, the New Site Royals, State B champions, took the court against Jackson Wingfield Falcons, State AA champions for the Grand Slam Championship. The Royals faced insurmountable odds facing the largest school in the state. A coach and his boys took an impossible shot at the ultimate title.

I have never met someone with so much faith. He never seems to falter. When he was called to preach, I questioned why he would. He was walking away from a successful career. I remember he had a lovely house and just had his first child. He ended up living in a small cabin on one of his wife's relatives land. The first time I saw it, I was taken back. He had been living in a big three bedroom house in a wonderful neighborhood. I thought to myself what had he done to himself. Moreover, his wife just had their second boy. My brother and I have always been close. I found myself asking him how was he going to make ends meet leading an inter-city congregation who most needed help themselves. I have never forgotten his answer...

My brother had faith in God would provide for him if he followed his path. He worked hard and kept his promise. I watched as over the years his faith prevailed. I wish I had half his faith. He gives to people and never ask for himself.
When I began to write The Measure of a Man, I turned to him. I live in the New England. Doing my research, I needed to talk to Dad's former players. I couldn't have done it without Gary. Not only did he help with my research, I ran everything by him and would call him nonstop. He never failed me.
